Abstract Art Inspired by Nature

In the 3 lessons of this 37-minute module Kathy Hocker leads the project “River Rhythms” inspired by geomorphology (how natural forces shape the landscape).

Materials
Needed

  • 2 sheets of drawing paper

  • pencil

  • eraser

  • paper towels

  • oil pastels, water-soluble pastels, or other soft color media

  • optional - tape

Lesson 1.
Inspired by Science

[length 5:35] Kathy Hocker provides background knowledge on river changes through real-time observation and different mapping tools to set up a project integrating science and visual arts. 

Lesson 2.
Starting the Artwork

[length 13:19] Kathy Hocker demonstrates the early steps of the project, including tips for successful drawing with students and adaptations for different ages.

Lesson 3.
Color, Texture, Rhythm, Contrast 

[length 17:54] Kathy Hocker demonstrates the ending steps of the project with numerous tips for instruction and management.
